Bias and prejudice

Bias. Prejudice. We all have it, it’s embedded, it’s just how the brain works. But we can identify it and control the outcome.
When I was a monk I read an article by John of Damascus (7th century a.D.) regarding a debate over two icons, that were part of the worshipping practice of that church. I was in favor of one side and interpreted the writing as favorable. Later I switched sides, for personal convenience reasons. When I read the article again I interpreted the writing as favorable again! That led me to the conviction that we can’t trust even our own mind. It is better to assume you don’t know, which leaves room to grow and learn, than assume you know everything.
